One hairdyer

This was the first big project in the first year of the master.
We out with a rough CAD model of the hairdryer, which we created in our first CAD course.
But during that course we didn’t care about the customer. Back then it was all about improving out CAD skills (Autodesk Alias).
You can imagine how many design flaws a product has, if you don’t care about the customer.

This was the starting point for this course. First step was 3D-Printing the old model.
But to be honest the model was bad.
What was even worse, was the handle. Way too short and too thick.
We did ergonomic surveys to evaluate, how the handle feels in the hand.
Because I want to find a comfortable handle, I created multiple alternatives out of clay.

After I found my optimal handle I created a new 3d-model. The design improved as well.
Better CAD skills, more thinking and better proportions were the main reasons.
During the process the purpose of my hairdryer got clearer.

Once I was happy with the design I could do renderings.
After getting lectures about lighting and rendering my visualisation skills improved.

In the final 2 to 3 weeks I started building my prototype.
It’s tricky because you have to change your 3D-model to make it printable.
After the parts were printed (I had a lot) I had to sand, fill in and sand again.
We spent hours together in the workshop, which makes it quite fun.

After the prototype was finally done we had the final presentation.
I got used to presenting because we do it a lot in the courses.
Then you start to have fun and come up with great stories to sell the product.

To tie it all together I took photos of my final model and created a portfolio for my work.
