Hexdrill

Hexdrill was the result of the power drill project, where the objective was to design a concept of a power drill. My idea was to make something that looks spacy and futuristic while still being humble and somewhat “down to earth”. I wanted to use simple and geometric shapes to make it intuitive and look less intimidating and complex, and thus the main shape of the body became a hexagon. The ventilation holes were made of a Spotify code with the song “Rocketman” by Elton John that was extruded from the main body of the drill. This was mainly a gimmick, but it also furthered explored the essence of the space theming the power drill had. Ergonomic tools such as RULA and people size was used to improve the ergonomics of the handle of the product. Clay was also used to test different handles; this was done together with a questionnaire where people could rank them in order to find the perfect handle shape. The drill was modelled through surface modelling in Alias and renders were made in Keyshot. All the part were then 3D-printed and assembled to build a physical full-scale prototype. A big portion of the time was spent on putting spackle on and sanding to achieve nice quality surfaces. The parts where then painted and to make it look realistic. A spring was also put inside the trigger so that it feels like the proper thing. To present the work, a workbook was made to show the progress together with a nice animation and an oral presentation.
