This project focused on redesigning the cab interior of Terri’s small forestry machines to improve comfort, storage capacity, and aesthetics. Small forestry machines are typically known for offering less comfort than their larger counterparts, largely due to limited space and cramped interior layouts. Terri’s current cab interior is no exception, and its design has evolved through incremental additions over time without a thorough redesign, resulting in an unergonomic and cluttered workspace. The project followed the “double diamond” process framework, combining design thinking with structured product development. A user-centred design approach was used throughout, with focus on ergonomics and comfort. The primary focus was on redesigning the structural elements of the interior, such as wall panels and control modules, where features like storage compartments, switches, and controls are integrated. A full-scale prototype was built to test the final concept. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in storage capacity and aesthetics. Key improvements included better placement of modules, intuitive storage solutions, and a modernized visual expression. The layout now better supports long working hours by placing frequently used elements within easy reach and making the environment more comfortable and efficient for operators. In addition to design, materials and manufacturing methods were explored to ensure the concept is feasible for production. While further technical development is needed before implementation, the concept sets a strong foundation for future product development. This redesign shows how applying a human-centered design process can transform a functional but outdated cab into a modern and ergonomic workspace that enhances both operator experience and Terri’s competitiveness in the forestry machinery market.
