This Thesis project explores the innovative design of a wall-mounted luminaire that harmoniously blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics by incorporating natural materials such as bamboo cane and banana fiber. Embracing the rich heritage of handcrafting, this project offers users a unique, emotionally enriching experience through a ‘Do it Yourself’ (DIY) system. Users can personally knit bamboo cane to create intricate patterns along with banana fiber, connecting deeply with the materiality and craftsmanship of the particular luminaire.

This interactive approach not only allows for personal expression and creativity but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and connection to traditional artisanal techniques. The design aims to evoke different elements of design for emotions and a sense of mindfulness, transforming the creative process into a rewarding and meaningful experience. This project promotes sustainable design, emphasizing environmental consciousness and contributing to a circular economy. The luminaire is designed to be eco-friendly, ensuring that it can either be easily recycled or discarded in a landfill with minimal environmental impact after its intended lifespan has been fulfilled.

The brand name ‘BELAKU’ has been chosen for this product, derived from the regional Kannada language. This name serves as a metaphor, embodying various meanings and perspectives that revolve around aesthetics, culture, and the intrinsic value of light. In Kannada, ‘BELAKU’ means the illumination provided by a light source, whether natural or artificial.

On a deeper level, ‘BELAKU’ symbolizes bringing light into the lives of craftsmen and especially abled individuals, highlighting the project’s social impact. Traditionally, ‘BELAKU’ also refers to the ritual of lighting a lantern during the creation of products, symbolizing hope, betterment, and success.
