Design of a shelter and storage space for homeless people

2024
This project aims to discover the needs of a homeless person and apply them to a design process to develop a portable and foldable shelter as well as a storage space for their belongings. To understand the needs semi-structured interviews were conducted, including two homeless people, two NGO workers, and one faculty member of the municipality of Athens.
The data from the interviews showed that a homeless person needs to feel the freedom the rest of the people experience, to feel safe both for their physical integrity and the safety of their belongings while finally, they need to be well informed. Using the Bootleg Bootcamp method to apply the findings into the design process it was possible to design a user-friendly shelter and a storage space for homeless people.
The results showed that such a product could be feasible as in its core it was designed to be manufacturable. This product could be part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of companies all around the world. These companies could collaborate and deliver such a product to municipalities all around the world.
